Making ice cream can be a fun way to spend an afternoon and make delicious treats for friends and family.
In this guide we'll show you how to make a simple vanilla ice cream in just 5 steps. We'll also give you the ingredients and equipment you need to start creating your own ice cream flavours.
Step 1 - Prepare the base
1. Add the milk and cream to a saucepan, and bring to a simmer.
2. Stir in the condensed milk and add the salt.
3. Turn off the heat and stir the mixture until the salt has dissolved.
4. Let the mixture cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until completely chilled.
Step 2 - Make the custard
5. Add the eggs and vanilla extract to the base and whisk until smooth.
6. Pour the custard through a sieve into another container.
7. Put the container into the fridge to cool for 2 hours.
Step 3 - Make the ice cream
8. Bring the base back to a boil and cook for 10 minutes.
9. Whisk in the sugar and continue to cook for another 5 minutes.
10. Remove from the heat and pour into the ice cream maker.
11. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
12. After churning, transfer the ice cream to a container.
Step 4 - Serve and store
13. Serve immediately or allow to soften slightly in the freezer.
14. Store in the freezer for up to two weeks.
Step 5 - Add flavour
15. If desired, add any of the following ingredients to the ice cream before churning:
• Chocolate chips
• Strawberries
• Blueberries
• Chocolate sauce
• Flavoured liqueurs or spirits
• Cinnamon sticks
• Peanuts
• Pecans
16. Allow the ice cream to rest for 30 minutes before serving.
17. Serve in bowls with waffles, biscuits or toast.
